Visual C++ and CDT [message #148360] Thu, 07 July 2005 14:46 Go to next message

Hello All...

Sorry for my understanding of CDT but please bare with me.

Can I use say the 'Windows Platform SDK' and 'Microsoft Visual C++
Toolkit 2003' with CDT.

I realize this would not be cross platform but if not are there any
plans to support the Visual C++ subset under CDT. Say a 'Standard Visual
C++ Project' and a 'Managed Visual C++ Project'.

It would be nice to put some pressure on Microsoft. Plus it would be a
good thing to have another IDE for Visual C++ outside of Microsoft.

There has been some interest but we don't have full support for this
environment in the CDT. You should be able to write a makefile for the
standard builder that calls the msvc tools. You wouldn't be able to use
the CDT debugger, though.

I'm not sure you could sell Microsoft on this. They are well aware of
the CDT and we've met them at EclipseCon. But they didn't seem eager to
help us out.

My personal thoughts is that the open source community should spend more
effort getting them MinGW (Minimal Gnu for Windows) environment capable
enough to build good Windows apps that are GPL free. I think the pieces
are all out there but it just not bundled together in an easy
distribution (now there's an idea :).
