eclipse-SDK-3.4M6a-win32.zip and Visual Editor [message #144726] Tue, 29 April 2008 03:01 Go to next message
Eclipse UserFriend
Hi all,

I tried wtp eclipse installation with eclipse-SDK-3.4M6-win32.zip
according to:
http://wiki.eclipse.org/VE/Installing#Paulg.27s_VE_Install

it succeeded.

Now I am stuck with reinstalling. I do not get the:
"Open eclipse again and go to Window->Preferences->Java. If after
expanding 'Java' you see Visual Editor at the bottom, then you are good to
go."

(I tried starting eclipse.exe -clean already)

Neither with the old wtp nor with the available
eclipse-SDK-3.4M6a-win32.zip (notice the M6a!)

Will there be a running tandem of latest (or as late as possible) eclipse
and latest VE?

Bye
leder

I don't know where you read because as far as I've seen here and on the
wiki was that 3.3 was the next one that expects compatibility with VE
right now and thats with jumping through hoops to install a bunch of stuff
manually right now. You can beat your self up and install it to 3.4 but it
wont be functional to the point of your enjoyment(Items don't stick in
frames and don't load on constructor call at least with me) .I'm trying to
save you the trouble. If you projects are not dependent on 3.4 stuff you
might try 3.2.2 for your VE pleasures. Creepingly with vista sp1 I've has
limited crashes to almost when i forget that it crashes.Only thing i
notice in sp1 that bugs is it sticking when trying to push the stop button
to end an eclipse program(which for the most is solved by an eclipse
restart) I've built . If the road map's correct you only have a few more
months till an fully eclipse approved 1.3 release comes out and thats for
"3.3" not 3.4 and you wont see one till the winter holidays.

I am not reading here. I am trying to make my mind up:
you have one stable eclipse (3.2.2) and two beta versions? Or are they
stable, testing and unstable? And stable (europa) has no visual editor and
needs callisto to have gui editing... Where do I find this information:
here or elsewhere?

But enough criticism: europa and callisto are doing fine job for me!

Well if you look on the downloads area 3.3.2 is a release which is stable
and 3.4M7 is stable too it just depends on if the features are available
for what you need.Release in my words is that its been through extensive
testing so there is little to no chance of problems for users .
My teacher explains that eventually software will catch up with 3.4
and up but it takes time to get to where we(the user) want the features.
Like I said 3.2.2 is the one I know for a fact runs Visual editor well
and in sp1 doesn't crash. Its a stable release you just have to find it
under archives since it seems eclipse is moving faster than the extras can
run. If you go to the Visual editor wiki theres a roadmap that at least
give you an idea that someday that you and I will see VE in an easy to
download form for 3.3 and we'll all be happy . Also if you want to
experiment(which I don't) there is the instructions for VE milestone 1 for
3.3.2 there as well.

heres the VE's website where you can find the road map and possibly
anything else about VE http://wiki.eclipse.org/VE
