If I select a block of code using Alt-Shift-Up that I want eclipse to
format, then press Ctrl-Shift-F, the code formatter does nothing. However
if I select the block at the start of the line with the mouse or holding
Shift-Arrow keys, the formatter does its thing. It seems the only way the
codeformatter works on a selection is when a block is selected from the
beginning of a line, and there is no way to do that using Alt-Shift-Up.

Does anyone have a workaround aside from going to emacs?

sounds like a formatter limitation - it should be able to format arbitrary
blocks
