I've heard a lot about eclipse, but it seems to be chugging along pretty
slowly. No plugin yet for Vim? No open source IDE will survive without
supporting vim.
I heard that Kdevelop as voted best IDE, even among commercial ones. What
can eclipse do that Kdevelop doesn't do?

Check out Jigloo. I can't comment further as I'm still evaluating that
myself.

That's not true. Further, I'd rather see resources spent on supporting
column-mode editing and stuff, than ancestral/traditional/stoneage features.
The entire vi ui model is irrelevent in a gui anyway. Before you go up in
flames, realise that my company produced Bedit, after we merged with JBstar
Software.

Java, for starters. Kdevelop only works in a KDE environment. Like it or
not, the majority of us work on a Windows or CygWin environment and
cross-build to Linux, et alia. Right now I still have to use Kdevelop for
some things.
