I have HelloWorld.java open open in my my workspace and want to open
another version of this class HelloWorld.java thats on my desktop so I can
visually compare them in the editor.
The problem is when I double click on the class on my desktop it complains
about the workspce already in use and I have to choose another. But I want
it to open in the current workspace. so they appear next to each other in
the editor.

You can't open arbitrary files in Eclipse by double-clicking them in
Windows - it doesn't work that way.
What you can do is File > Open File... to open the file on your desktop.
