- Newbie question about Eclipse desktop [message #101660] Wed, 14 September 2005 07:53 Go to next message

Am I the only one to be thoroughly confused by the plethora of icons and
symbols on the Eclipse desktop, especially in the Package Explorer view?
What on earth do the various bits and bobs next to the various elements
mean? And in the Java editor the left-hand column sometimes also has
various symbols whose meaning is a mystery to me. Is there a list
anywhere?

Silly newbie question I know, but the help files don't seem to (or I'm
looking for the wrong thing).

See Window -> Preferences -> Java -> Appearance -> Members Sort Order.
It gives names to the icons. I had to discover this too. Don't know if
and where it is mentioned in the help docs.

The JDT icons are described in Help: Java Development > User Guide >
Reference > Icons
or directly:
http://help.eclipse.org/help31/index.jsp?topic=/org.eclipse. jdt.doc.user/reference/ref-156.htm

Thanks Dani. I thought I'd looked there, but obviously didn't.

Well, I'm archaic too (been programming in various languages since 1963).
So the "U" is probably OK.
