This is the XML schema from Microsoft to easily create Excel files (there
is also one for Word).

Does BIRT generate XML reports? (I know 2.0 talks about XML data sources)

Do you have good documentation on this? I have searched and found
little. It seems Microsoft provides less info on this than the little
they provide on other things. It seems they treat it like a red-headed
stepchild ("Yes, we do XML") and it probably will go away when they
start using their new XML format.

Also, make sure you read the license!! You can READ but not write!!
This means you probably won't be able to use it in BIRT. Try OpenDoc
instead.

I thought I had heard something like that. I wonder if the same will be
true of Microsoft's new format that they are submitting to the
standards. Probably be a different twist.

I'm considering POI-HSSF (http://jakarta.apache.org/poi/hssf/) instead
anyway. I should know better than to trust MS...

Birt 2.0 will supposedly be able to export your report data into CSV, which
Excel handles with ease. Just curious... what are you guys needing to do
above & beyond that?
