BUSINESS: Eclipse RCP License [message #8601] Tue, 21 December 2004 07:55 Go to next message

I was send to this newgroup with following post:

Hello,

So, I work for a client who wants to create a windows based fat client.
Seeing their specifications I would recomend Eclipse RCP.
Still I am not sure about a few things concerning the license.
I read and hurd a lot of stuff but none of them gave a clear answer to
these questions:

1. Can I sell my software containing:
a. Eclipse RCP instance
b. my business specific plug-ins

2. Do I have to go open source with my plugins?

Greetz,

Philippe,

The short answer to #1 is "YES".

The short answer to #2 is "NO".

This is all answered in the Eclipse Public License and in the FAQ's on our
legal page, which I encourage you to have your client's lawyer review.

The EPL specifically allows you to ship your work --- combined with
Eclipse --- under your own commercial license.

I agree with #1. But I do not agree with #2. There are ways to avoid
having to go open source with your code. I would start by reading the
license.

I guess I was not clear. The EPL is clear that you do not have to open
source your own code, provided you comply with the terms of the EPL.

Indeed, I read the FAQ and it states clearly YES and NO :-)

Now that you have read the FAQ, try reading the license...
