JSP Editor in eclipse 3.0 [message #85729] Thu, 14 August 2003 22:25 Go to next message

I know this has probably been beaten up quite a bit before, but I did
not find anything in the newsgroup about it - so here goes.

I have used a bunch of external jsp plugins for eclipse - solareclipse,
lomboz, myeclipseside etc, and none of them match to what a built in jsp
editor would provide. I just tried IDEA 3.0.5 and the built in JSP
Editor in there really rocks. So I was wondering whether there has been
any interest by the eclipse dev-team to include a built in JSP Editor in
the 3.0 release or not.

I would certainly be very happy to see one included.

Thanks,
Jalpesh.

Jalpesh,

There is a newsgroup for web development tools ( eclipse.webtools ) on
this news server.

There is also a webtools project supposedly in progress (
http://www.eclipse.org/webtools/index.html ) though you would be hard
pressed to find any signs activity apart from people posing similar
questions to yourself.

There is definately a requirement for a decent JSP editor. The project
plan for Eclipse 2.2 ( now renamed to 3.0 ) includes extensions to jdt
to handle "java like" code (eg scriptlets in jsp's) though I think wdt
was kicked off to handle these issues.

Wayne Parrot ( of Genuitec ), can you give us any insights on progress?
I have seen many offers to help but it seems to fall on deaf ears.

Regards
Oz

Oz,

I believe you have inappropriately associated my organization, Genuitec, and
me with a leadership position on the Web Tools project. While we have
worked very hard to extend and promote Eclipse as a J2EE development
environment, at this time we have no official role on the project or on the
PMC. Just as you, Genuitec has an interest in the direction of the Web
Tools project. Yet, the answers you seek can only be provided by the
project's PMC leadership.

Wayne,

Thank you for the response. I was indeed under the false inpression that
Genuitec is on the project commitee and a leader in the Web Tools
development effort.

I have been evaluating myecliseide and I think its a good product. I
hope you can offer your expertise in the Web Tools project.

Lack of response to offers of help seems to be an issue with the
developer community at large.

As a member of the eclipse consortium perhaps you can offer some a
contact for people to realise their creative efforts.

Regards.
Oz

I just sent this message to webtools. But i think that it should be post
here too (sorry for crossposting).

Really J2ee is a wide very world. So I think it could start off with a good
jsp editor : (. One that would not enforcing you to mix a lot with your
project configuration structure adding directories and files like others do.
At least Lomboz, that is the only decent editor out there. I think there
must be a good one in eclipse core. As I'm here, could start with some
sugestions. People, let's start to make it roll, even if Genuitec wants it
to die. I'm not an expert in eclipse plugins, but I would like to help in
any way, maybe be a very very very good reason to learn better. And I
suppose that hundreds of developers out there are willing to it too.

It can have other modules, too. Like a plugin to tomcat. Sorry Sysdeo, yours
are very good, but I think there should exist one opensource to push
competition level : ) And it could have JSP debugging direct at jsp code,
like we have at jbuilder (the best I've seen) or Netbeans, which is
opensource (since 2000) too. I don't want to change to netbeans becouse of
it, since I like too much eclipse IDE. Gonna wait a till more, to see if a
good soul to donate some code to opensource, or having to install the whole
world (like lomboz) just to get code completion in a JSP ??

Of course, a lot of people would want a j2ee plugin too. But I think it's
another story, since there are so many approaches to deal with J2EE helping
tools (since doclets tags or a visual component tool) and so many different
vendors. web specification is a lot narrower than J2ee. This support lack
(JSP/servlet tools at the core) and swing/swt editors are the only missing
points of eclipse, to be the best choice at IDE out there.
