I have been using Eclipse for the last few months with no problems. I
downloaded 3.1RC1 today and erased my previous Eclipse version. Then I
unzipped the new version and tried to run it. I get the follwing message
after the splash screen:
---------------------------
Eclipse
---------------------------
An error has occurred. See the log file
d:\Program
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
I reinstalled 3.0.2 but now I am getting the same error. I search the
newsgroup archives and found that similar problems were had with java
versions < 1.4. As can be seen in the log file, I am using java 1.5.0_03.
An extract from the log file is below. Please help!

I run 3.1M7.
A simple question but when you started the Eclipse IDE did you use the
-clean as a parameter.

I don't know what the cause is, but I can tell you that the error you're
getting is not the same as the one when trying to run Eclipse on a < 1.4
JDK. In that case, people get a "class not found" error because there is
no XML parser. In your case, the XML parser is there but appears to be
choking on something.
Sorry I can't help more - I just thought this info might prevent you
from going on a wild goose chase about JDK versions that isn't likely
your problem.

Eric

Hi,
Do you have any 3rd party xml parser in your classpath (especially in
jre\lib\ext)?
There is a bugzilla report for a similar error:

It seems Eclipse is only picky on the first run. I had 5 jar files from
jfreechart in my jre\lib\ext directory (gnujaxp.jar,
jcommon-1.0.0-pre2.jar, jfreechart-1.0.0-pre2.jar, junit.jar, and
servlet.jar). I removed them and ran Eclipse and it worked. I replaced
them after the first run and Eclipse still runs fine. I guess there is
some process that takes place only on the first run involving the XML
parser.
Thanks for the help,

Just a helpful aside: it is not recommended to put libraries like
JFreechart and servlet API in your jre ext directory. In fact, I always
avoid putting _anything_ in there. Just like it is better to avoid a
global system CLASSPATH, doing so help to avoid any problems such as
this one where one application might have a conflict with stuff that is
global like that.
It is a far better strategy to use shortcuts or batch/script files to
launch Java applications, because you always know exactly what JVM is
being used and exactly what is on the classpath. If you have a system
CLASSPATH and/or libs in the ext directory, it is not obvious.

Eric
