A word about examples and GEF [message #59947] Wed, 29 January 2003 17:01 Go to next message

After spending many an hour going through this newsgroup, I have come to a
conclusion: it is not yet time for the general purpose Java programmer to
make use of GEF. I want to state that I think what is being done is
wonderful, and at some point when it is more finished and more
documentation (more like user guides, not javadoc) and examples are
available, it will be more usable for folks like me (Ahhh... life on the
bleeding edge of technology! 8D ).
At that point, the developers will have more time for things like articles
on how to do stuff for the uninitiated. I am not going to give up, but I
can tell it is going to be a while. This is also true of Eclipse itself,
but it is not quite as complex as GEF.
One thing that I have picked up from several of the posts is that there
have been several requests for a "medium difficulty example". Something
that falls between the HelloGef and Shapes examples (not complete enough)
and the Logic example (too complete, too complex). This would be
constructed and documented in such a way as to gently lead the unitiated
to an understanding of how to use GEF to construct things like GUI
builders that can produce code for SWT apps. Anybody up to the challenge?

Keep up the excellent work though! I am totally impressed by what I have
seen so far, I can't wait for it to be a little closer to finished! 8)

I have been playing with GEF and examples. Although there is no user guides,
but the javadoc is pretty helpful
and it can be setup easily to step inside GEF code. I find that very useful
too.

One more thing is GEF developers are extremely helpful in answering
questions in GEF questions. Thanks to all who contribute.
