New article on this topic published today. You can use Mozilla
Thunderbird or Outlook to search messages. You just have to download
them for offline searching, first.

Details on how to do so using Moz and Outlook are available here:

http://download.eclipse.org/tools/emf/scripts/docs.php#refer ences

Takes a while, but it's worth it if you're looking for something
specific. Something I didn't mention specifically in the articles is
that Moz stores its mail as text, whereas Outlook stores is in a
partly-binary format which introduces a lot of non-readable chars into
it (and bloats the file a little). On the other hand, their built-in
message searching is better than simply CTRL-F'ing through a very large
file in a browser or text editor, so choose the method that makes more
sense for your needs.

Cheers,

Nick Boldt

Updated yesterday with details for how to actually FIND the extracted
newsgroup post files using Thunderbird and Mozilla. Thanks to Ed for
pointing out the non-intuitive location of Mozilla's newsfile caching. ;-)
