Are you aware of two existing (and mature) open-source projects in this
space? Mondrian [http://sourceforge.net/projects/mondrian/] is a
multidimensional engine, and JPivot
[http://sourceforge.net/projects/jpivot/] is a web-based multidimensional
user interface. I am lead-developer of Mondrian, and also have close ties
with the JPivot project.

I know that BIRT requirements are at an early stage, but I think Mondrian
and JPivot could be key components in BIRT. What do other people think?

By the way, there are still some significant hurdles with regard to
intellectual property, which I'd rather not go into in this forum. But if
everyone agrees that Mondrian and JPivot are a natural fit, and the rest of
the BIRT project seems to be gathering momentum, I think that I can persuade
the stakeholders that moving Mondrian and JPivot to Eclipse is in everyone's
best interests.

I'm currently working with Mondrian as my OLAP data source (prototyping,
for now). It's great work you and the Mondrian team have done, really
useful.

As to your comment, I would have thought that Mondrian would be one of
many possible sources for the reporting tool and not a part of BIRT as
such. Drivers to Mondrian could be developed but shouldn't the reporting
tool be data-provider agnostic?

Then again, the name of the project is Business Intelligence /and/
Reporting Tools. A multi-dimensional engine is definitely part of the BI
part of it (so many things are...).

As for JPivot, I haven't really used it but I have a feeling that it's
closer to the UI, thus closer to the Reporting Tool. The pivot table
algorithms that were developed for it can definitely be useful to a data
manipulation tool.

I can vouch for Mondrian and JPivot. I've experimented with them some and
contributed a few patches. They would be a good addition to the Eclipse
project.

Yes, we are aware cos i have trouble getting it to work on Compere, but my
colleague did (my incompetency, and the forum didnt help me). From his
mastery of the cubes and schemas, (which he doesnt want to show me - due to
his 'IP'), i would then strongly support JPivot/Mondrian in BIRT. They uses
the common MDX schema, but main point is that BIRT may revolutionise the
meaning of Datamining way beyond our imaginations, judging from the BIRT
Proposal. My little other wariness is about the JP/Mondrian's IP involved
(with due legal respect, and i trust Julian can get it out of the way),
Eclipse for what it is now been to no one in particular is now my godsend
choice and last week i submitted 2 tutorials to my sourceforge.net
/projects/compiere-mfgscm take made them moved from VI/NetBeans to Eclipse
in no time! So my last one cent is that it must be strictly OSS (so i can
get even with my colleaque).
