Hi.

I'm the project lead for the Eclipse e4 Project, which is the incubator
for the next major version of the Eclipse platform. If you just
happened across this new(s) group, and haven't heard of e4 before, I
should tell you that the best place to learn about it is on the Eclipse
wiki at "http://wiki.eclipse.org/E4". There you will find
- background on e4;
- current work areas;
- pointers to demos;
- names of people who are already involved;
- and several communication channels, including a mailing list, an IRC
channel, a recurring phone meeting, and now this newsgroup.

The e4 project proposal says:
"The mission of the e4 project is to build a next generation platform
for pervasive, component-based applications and tools."

Now, while that is completely true, I believe e4 is first and foremost
an opportunity for this truly awesome, capable, and downright smart
community that lives at Eclipse.org to work together to make sure that
Eclipse has a platform that we *all* believe will be the best basis for
development for the foreseeable future. Part of that is a fundamental
shift from "getting the message out" to "creating the message
together". This is going to require as much friendly, open, thoughtful
communication, as we all can manage, and this newsgroup is another
important opportunity for that.

So if you're interested in getting involved, welcome. Let's talk.

McQ.

Hi McQ,

Funny tag line, sounds like McG, the director of T4...
Any resemblance planned here?

Since you are the "director" of E4 now ;-)

What is the time line for E4 so far?
I know, T4 is going to be out some time in 2009. That's about when E3.5
or "Galileo" shall be out next year.

Is there a committed year so far, or could this change similar to e.g.
the next JDK release 7 ?;-)

Last but not least, I did a bit of research on the Galileo name. As I
found it a good choice for being more open to other models and views of
the world in my Babel talk, and wanted to find out which of the 62(-3)
moons of Jupiter they named after him.

Turns out, Eclipse must have switched from a single moon to the observer
of the 4 biggest. As no single moon seems to carry his name according to
Wikipedia.

On the other hand, Galileo's own fate
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galileo#Church_controversy) means, we all
at Eclipse are damn lucky Obama won the election.

I'm not joking to suggest, a President McCain or at least VP Sarah Palin
would have been likely to ban a Release Train with such a heretic
name-bearer from being released at all ?;-)

And just like Galileo himself all further releases including E4 as well.

Back to serious topics:
One thing I was asked by people in the audience regarding Babel was,
whether it could provide certain message strings in a reusable form.

Meaning, if one project (like "core") defines a string like "File",
"Quit" or "About" already, other projects could use this "Alphabet" in
their own UI.

Any chance, we could flag up this idea for E4?

Cheers,
Werner

Hi Werner,

I don't know if you follow the e4-dev mailling list I there proposed a
new change to how we translate strings using Interfaces so the
backend-store for this could be anything from a database to ... .

IMHO the indirection has 2 advantages:
- Strings are not resident in memory all the time
- the backend-store is flexible
