WSAD 5.0 (using Eclipse 2.0.1) has its own binary in front of the eclipse
one. One advantage that you can select the workspace root from the GUI.
Other more subtle differences are IBM additions like Open/Close Project and
the possibility to import/migrate from 4.0.x projects. One disadvantage
seems to be that you can't specify e.g. JDK 1.4.x at startup (is this
supported with Eclipse?)
I haven't found any incompatibilites with 1.0 plugins with XDE or WSAD 4 or
2.0 plugins with WSAD 5. It's a bigger problem that plugins rarely document
exactly what Eclipse version they require and also often don't support the
automatic update scheme (there isn't a standard even for how a plugin zip
file should look like).
Of course, if new plugins use any specific features in Eclispe 2.1, you'll
have to wait for Rational/IBM to upgrade their toolsets before you can apply
them there.
