Do you see the same problem with SUN or IBM JDK? I am on Ubuntu and have
not seen any performance problems running Eclipse using either JDK.

Hi,
I agree with Igor.
My colleagues and I experimented the same troubles under Ubuntu with gcj
or OpenJDK, and the only solution we found was to switch to the Sun JVM...
Hope that helps

Please don't use gcj: it's not supported by Eclipse and causes a
significant amount of questions in the "Why does my Eclipse doesn't
start/keeps crashing" section in the newsgroups.
Have a look at http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/moreinfo/jre.php for a
list of supported VMs.
