Editors opening very slowly on Linux [message #334486] Thu, 12 February 2009 13:33 Go to next message

I'm using Eclipse 3.4.1 on Fedora, although colleagues who use Ubuntu have
also seen similar issues. Every time I open a new file, it takes a
perceptibly long time -- several seconds -- to actually open the editor
window. I've tried with an empty .eclipse directory and a fresh workspace
and with both GCJ 1.5 and OpenJDK 1.6, and it always happens.

Oddly, for me this is only on my desktop machine; I have no issue on my
laptop, which is running the same version of Fedora.

Is this a known problem? Where should I look for suggestions?

Thanks,

MEF

Addendum: here's a video of the sort of speed that I'm talking about:
http://www6.informatik.tu-muenchen.de/~foster/eclipse.ogg

In the video, I only open one Java editor and one Ant editor, but
subsequent Java/Ant editors are equally slow to open -- it seems to have
nothing to do with initialising classes on first opening or anything like
that.

Do you see the same problem with SUN or IBM JDK? I am on Ubuntu and have
not seen any performance problems running Eclipse using either JDK.

Hi,

I agree with Igor.

My colleagues and I experimented the same troubles under Ubuntu with gcj
or OpenJDK, and the only solution we found was to switch to the Sun JVM...

Hope that helps

Mickael

Please don't use gcj: it's not supported by Eclipse and causes a
significant amount of questions in the "Why does my Eclipse doesn't
start/keeps crashing" section in the newsgroups.

Have a look at http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/moreinfo/jre.php for a
list of supported VMs.

Besides not using GCJ you might see this bug:
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=153936

Hallelujah! Adding -Dorg.eclipse.swt.internal.gtk.disablePrinting to the
-vmargs fixed the problem! My colleagues and I thank you. :)
