Welcome page when a feature is installed [message #332927] Fri, 14 November 2008 11:54 Go to next message

Hi, in the old days of Eclipse 2.x we were able to show a Welcome page
after a feature was installed. With Eclipse 3.x a new Intro page was
included which didn't offer such possibility. My question is... has this
history changed with las Eclipse versions? Is it possible now to add a
Welcome page to my primary feature show it is shown when the feature is
installed in an already working workspace?

Thanks in advance,

Chemi.

I'm pretty sure if your feature contributes to the Universal Welcome
(aka, Universal Intro) then it will be shown the first time a workspace
is started after your feature is installed.
This EclipseCon2007 talk has a pretty good presentation about it:

Hope this helps,
Eric

Right, I understood that from other posts in this same group. But my
question was about showing some kind of Welcome page just after Feature
installation and not when a new workspace is created. Basically, I am
looking for a way to tell the user that the feature is ready, and where
and how can be used. Something like the old style Welcome page. I want
to avid a user who don't know if the feature is there because he doesn't
know if he has to look for a popup menu, a toolbar button, or what...

Thanks for your comments,

Chemi.

Investigating:

I think it is more or less, the answer to my question.

[copying this to the UA newsgroup]
What I was trying to say is that I'm pretty sure that whenever a new
plugin is installed that contributes to universal welcome, the welcome
view will be shown the next time Eclipse starts. At least, that has been
my observation as we've recently started using Universal Welcome in our
product.

Hope this helps,
Eric

Thanks a lot Rizzo. Understood the way it works.
My problem is that it means I have to tie my features to a specific
product. I can't develop a generic "Welcome to my feature" screen like
in the past in a generic way. Now, I need to build features forEclipse,
RAD, RSA, etc... including the correct extension in each build. Right?

Any suggestion?
Once again, thanks for your comments,

Chemi.
