First, I'm copying this to the eclipse.platform newsgroup because it is
not RCP-specific.

Second, it is very difficult to help with layout problems without a
runnable snippet that demonstrates the problem. There are just too many
variables at play when it comes to layouts that describing them
accurately in words is very difficult. If you provide a runnable snippet
(as in http://www.eclipse.org/swt/faq.php#whatisasnippet) that
demonstrates the problem, you're more likely to get useful help.
