I've been wondering for some time why platform doesn't have an XML
editor on it's own to improve OOTB experience. Ant editor is part of the
platform but already specialized as it seems to imply a specific DTD.
Any ideas why this isn't refactored into a simple platform XML editor,
specific Ant editor built on top and an advanced WST editor?

Andreas,
I think it's a basic lack of resource. There's also a lot of drive to
keep the platform smaller rather than allowing it to grow bigger and
bigger. On could certainly argue that installing the JEE package gives
you the out of the box experience you need if you want an XML editor
(though that doesn't help provide an ant editor build on the WST XML
editor).

Even more- platform has this editor already- it's just not exposed as
such. Ant editor capabilities are just fine, just a little too much with
the DTD applied...
In consolidation with WTP were possible it would even decrease overall
code size.
