JREs should be backwards compatible. I wonder if there's a
<workspace>/.metadata/.log produced that would help give more details...

I can start Eclipse 1.0, using a Sun 1.6 VM, on Windows XP.
Which version of Windows are you using? Are you on a 64 bit machine?
