The Eclipse Platform provides the core frameworks and services
upon which all plug-in extensions are created. It also provides the runtime
in which plug-ins are loaded, integrated, and executed. The primary purpose
of the Platform is to enable other tool developers to easily
build and deliver integrated tools.
More details...
The Eclipse Platform Project is only one part of the Eclipse Project. It is the Eclipse Project that is responsible for, among other things, creating the Eclipse SDK, our premier Java and plug-in development tooling. Please see the Eclipse Project website for more info.
The Platform subproject is broken down into components. Each component operates like a project unto its own, with its own set of committers, bug categories and mailing lists.
