I have several Lua function definitions in a text file. These functions are called from another program.

However, I would like to use LDT to check a function for syntax errors. I believe that syntax errors should be indicated by error markers? How can I make LTD find these errors?

I put the cursor on one of the function definitions and tried "Run" and also "Debug", but none of these worked.

You need to create a Lua Project and add your source file in a source folder of this one.
