I have a use case where i need to initiate a process which talks to an external database, does some transactions. After the transaction is done i need to know if the response has come for this transaction. What role the work type does here? What all settings i need to do in order to achieve this? Do i need an event mechanism to deal with this. Any pointers will definitely help.

For example: consider the following flow:
Process A ----> Initiates some event ---> Back end transaction

Process A <--- receives the response <---- Back end transaction completed

What role work type configuration plays here within IPP.

Thanks
